The Beak and Feather Disease can be easy to identify in its initial stage. There will be a loss of features that cannot be attributed to the bird’s self-plucking. However, some other symptoms may include;
- Clubbed features
- Loss pigment in colored feather
- Bloody shafts in feathers
- Sharp feathers
- Loss of powder down
As the diseases show progress, the bird will become depressed for days and it will die suddenly.
The PBFD is caused by a virus known as Circovirus. It can spread from infected birds to healthy birds by direct contact, usually from the dust of feathers. The diseases can also be transmitted from contact with an infected nest box or some other items. Infected birds can also pass on the circovirus to their young ones as well. Since, the virus can easily survive outside of the body for a year and it cannot be killed by disinfectant and it can be spread quickly and it is challenging to control.
Any bird which is infected with PBFD should be instantly quarantined. Euthanasia is recommended to avoid the spread and stop the bird’s suffering, as there is no actual treatment for viral infection.
To prevent PBFD, strict hygiene should be maintained followed in bird colonies, mainly controlling the dust. One should also regularly screen for PBFD. However, if the bird is found being infected with the virus, quarantine the bird and burn its next box to prevent the disease from spreading.
